WATERCOLOR with

Beginner/Intermediate
class covers principles of watercolor. Students will develop skills
necessary to produce finished paintings. Demonstrations in composition,
focal point and design will be covered. Bring any watercolors, brushes
and paper you have. Materials list provided by instructor at the first class.

PAINTING IN OILS OR ACRYLICS with

For students of all levels of experience. The course will cover both still life
and photographic sources and focus on composition as well as the use
and care of painting materials. The instructor will demonstrate various
painting techniques and also offer critiques. If you've always wanted to
learn to paint in oils or acrylics or if you've had some experience with either
medium, this class is for you. A materials list is available upon registration,
but easels will be provided.

POTTERY with
Bracken Feldman

Hand-building of pottery and sculpture (coil, pinch, slab-roller techniques),
throwing on the wheel, and lead-free glazing are all covered in this course.
Independent projects are encouraged. Weekly demonstrations and
personalized instruction in all areas of pottery. All levels welcome.

"OPEN STUDIO" FOR ADULT POTTERY STUDENTS
Every Saturday from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Fee $5.00 per visit (cash or check)
Putnam Arts Council would like to invite their
currently enrolled adult ceramic students
to enjoy open studio time. Students should feel free
during this time to work on current projects, or to be creative beyond
their normal limits. All equipment will be available for your use from the
slab roller to the wheels. Projects not originating in current class will be
charged materials and firing fees.

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS
& TECHNIQUES
with James Sparks

Drawing is a natural human endeavor and this hands-on class will stress
understanding perceptual drawing from life as well as fantasy and
imagination. Graphite, charcoal, and conte' crayon will be used to explore
perspective, composition, design and volumes in space. Still-life,
landscape and figure studies will round out a class geared to both
beginners and intermediates, but even those with no experience in
drawing will benefit from this all-inclusive introduction to drawing
fundamentals.

Come in and learn about any phase of digital photography that interests
you, from buying a camera to printing, and everything in-between. Receive
clear, uncomplicated instruction.
Your creative journey begins with a two hour session held in Bernie
Kessler's studio in Yorktown. It is equipped with 4 printers, a 24" iMac and
2 PC laptops. Come alone or in a small group, no larger than 4 to insure
individual attention.

"OPEN STUDIO" FOR ADULT VISUAL ARTISTS
Tuesdays 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Visual artists are invited to use our newly renovated classroom during
these time periods each week. Bring your own materials and stay
as long as you want. Sorry, there is no storage capability for materials
or works in progress.
There will be a minimal $5 fee for each visit (check or cash).

MONOTYPE
WORKSHOP with
Jeanne Demotses
|
A one-of-a-kind image developed on a plate and transferred to paper is
called a monotype. It is a single print which has unique qualities that may
not be achieved in any other way. In this workshop, we will be using
water-based paints on Plexiglas plates which will be run through a small
etching press. If you've always wanted to learn about monotypes and
explore the possibilities of printmaking, this is the workshop for you. We
will discuss the differences between monotypes and monoprints and each
participant will have the opportunity to make at least one print. Materials
will be provided.

ADVENTURES IN
ART & SCIENCE with

For grades 4-8

We have all heard of mad scientists and kooky artists, but who knew the
two would get along so well together? Join us on an adventure of
experimentation where science and art are combined in a unique, fun and
interactive series of classes. Projects range in inspiration from famous
artist scientists like Leonardo DaVinci to concerns and studies of the earth
(multi-media paintings inspired by the strata of the earth). Interact,
observe, explore and create in our "art laboratory" at PAC!

THE WIGGLE
WORKSHOP with
Sarah Gilchrist
For grades 1-3
|
Does your child find any excuse to dance, jump, balance, twirl, perform,
and/or pose? Then we have the perfect new program for you! A full range
of body movements are explored through a variety of dance, drama, yoga
and visual arts projects (drawing painting, etc.) that engage the senses.
Create instruments, play in a drum circle and dance to the beat, learn how
to bend, stretch and balance by learning the ancient art of Yoga, work with
friends to create imaginary moving machines and put on theatrical
performances! In our wiggle workshop creativity and fun know no bounds!
Sarah is not only a gifted teaching artist but also a registered yoga
teacher. (Will be offered to Kindergarteners in Spring)

THE ART OF THE
ALTERED ART BOOK
with Sarah Gilchrist
For grades 7 and up

Learn how to transform an old book into an individualized work of art!
Regarded by some as visual journals, altered art books are a unique,
highly personal art form with limitless creative potential. This class
introduces projects and themes to create variations in book creations and
specific alterations to both covers and the inner pages. Projects include
hidden pockets and inserts, pop-ups, secret windows, moving parts, the
use of a variety of different mediums, and so much more. This class will
provide you with a variety of different approaches and ideas to get you
started on a long lasting cherished project in a book that could end up as a
family heirloom.

JEWELRY CREATIONS
FOR KIDS with

Interested in making your own jewelry? In this fun and creative class learn
how to design your own beads out of clay and even paper, string
necklaces, make button and spiral bracelets, design dangling earrings,
and so much more. Design, make, and then show off your own unique
creations that you can walk out and wear at the end of each class!

Our Faculty of Teaching Artists
Jeanne Demotses
Jeanne's primary medium is oil. She also often works in watercolor, acrylic,
pastel, monotype and collage. She experiments in making her own paper to
use as a ground for her pastel work, and uses the paper as a collage
element. Her work ranges from the figurative to the abstract and often
combines aspects of both. Jeanne's paintings are in many collections in the
U.S. and in Europe. She maintains a studio in Peekskill and is a member of
that community's growing artist district. In addition to her classes at the
Putnam Arts Council, she also teaches oil and watercolor painting at other
schools, and portrait painting in her studio. Jeanne studied art at Hunter
College, the Art Students League and the Westchester Art Workshop.
Cathy Faiella
Cathy Faiella has been a very popular teacher at the
"Express Yourself" summer program for years and
teaches at a variety of art centers and other children’s
programs in the area. Students flourish under her
energetic and patient teaching style. She is a graduate of
Connecticut College.
Bracken Feldman
Bracken is a working artist who enjoys many mediums such printmaking,
painting, collage and drawing, along with being an accomplished ceramicist.
She has taught in both elementary and high schools in the surrounding area.
Bracken has worked in clay for 14 years, working with many different process
from slip casting, wheel throwing, hand building, to sculpture. She has a
Bachelor of Fine Art from Alfred University School of Art and Design and a
Masters in Art Education from Manhattanville College.
Regina Gelfer
Regina has been working as an illustrator/cartoonist since 1988. Her first job
at Archie Comic Publications introduced her to the fun and zany world of
comic book art. Since then, Regina has been a freelance artist for such
companies as Marvel Comics, NYNEX (Verizon), Avaya and PepsiCo, Inc.
Currently, Regina is doing lots of illustrating and painting. She has two
children's books (one which she wrote and illustrated) due to be released in
early spring. To view her work, check out her website at

Sarah Gilchrist
A working visual artist and educator, Sarah introduces children to style and
medium by showing them the work of great artists through history and then
she encourages them to develop their own techniques, in pastel, watercolor,
collage and other media, with light, fun, and playful presentations and
activities. She has a Master of Arts degree in education from Manhattanville
College and she studied in Italy as well.
Anne Johann
Anne is a gifted artist and educator. Her work has received recognition by
museum curators and directors, has won awards and grants from many art
organizations, and has exhibited in galleries as well as regional and national
competitions. Anne combines an emphasis on technique paired with
developing the student’s individual vision. Her biography is listed in the
Marquis Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in America.
Dr. Bernie Kessler
Bernie Kessler has been an award winning photographer for over 50 years,
exploring and celebrating the beauty of nature, including human nature. His
images have been exhibited internationally and are in corporate and private
collections. He is recognized as an outstanding teacher. His ease of style
creates a non-threatening learning environment. Students have fun and feel
very personally inspired as they improve their photographic skills.
Lucy Montgomery
Lucy Montgomery has had a long and varied career in the arts as a
printmaker, painter, illustrator and arts advocate. She has lived and worked
as an artist in Columbia, Iran and Greece where she exhibited her work in
addition to living and exhibiting extensively in the Northeast for many years.
Lucy has illustrated children's books and currently is a freelance teaching
artist who concentrates in pastel painting for her own work.
Mary Schreiber
Mary Schreiber holds an M.S. from Bank Street College of Education. Her
teaching experience includes a variety of art classes for children as well as
college level courses in education. As an artist, she makes sculpture and
marionettes.
Donna Simone
Donna has been dancing and teaching dance for over 20
years. Her professional career includes off-Broadway and
concert work. She currently teaches at a variety of
programs in the area, and specializes in young children
and seniors. Her trademark is an energetic yet easy-going
teaching style and the determination to make dance an
enjoyable experience for every student.
Christopher Staples
An award-winning and often-exhibited artist who works in collage, painting
and printmaking, Christopher brings to her classes this philosophy:
I believe that everyone is inherently creative
and I love bringing out that aspect for people through both fundamental and
creative art techniques. There are many ways of making art and I try to
expose my students to many of them so that they may discover their own
path. Christopher has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
magna cum laude
from the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford.

NOTE ABOUT MATERIALS:
Adult Classes: all materials are included in the
cost of the course unless the listing indicates that
there is a list of materials for you to buy. Lists
may be obtained upon registration.
All materials are included with Youth classes.
REFUND POLICY:
A 100% refund may be granted prior to the first
class (minus a $20 administration fee). NO REFUNDS
WILL BE GRANTED AFTER THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. 100%
refunds are issued for classes cancelled by the
Putnam Arts Council.
(This does not apply to Express Yourself, which has a separate refund
policy.)
CLOSINGS:
It is the policy of the Putnam Arts Council to close
the building if the Mahopac schools are closed due
to inclement weather (days). Radio station WHUD (100.7 FM) will have our
closing info. You can also check their website

and look under "Storm Center". We will be listed under Putnam
Arts Council.
